German Arciniegas (December 6, 1900 – November 29, 1999) was a Colombian writer, journalist, historian, and diplomat. He is considered one of the most important intellectuals in Colombian history. His work focused on topics related to Latin American culture, history, politics, and literature. He was awarded numerous literary prizes for his works, including the National Literature Prize in 1986, and the highest cultural award in Colombia, the Order of Merit, in 1995. He was also a member of the Colombian Academy of Language and the Royal Spanish Academy. He served as a diplomat in several countries, including Mexico, Spain, and Chile, and was appointed as ambassador to Italy and Austria. His most famous books include "America en Europa", "Biografia del Caribe" and "Entre la Libertad y el Miedo". German Arciniegas died in 1999 at the age of 98.
